Introducing Kansas City and Lenexa Chiropractor Dr. Mark Schumacher

Kansas City chiropractor, Dr. Mark Schumacher

I had no clue what to expect the first time that I went to the chiropractor.  You see, I hurt my back diving into a swimming pool when I was 16.  My girlfriend's father, Dr. Anderson, talked with me on the phone and said he could probably help me.  My Dad and I figured why not, so he took me to see Dr. Anderson.  He examined me and then sat down with Dad and me and told me exactly what was wrong and how he could help me.  And that's exactly what he did.  Within a couple treatments I started to feel great again.  From that point on, I thought the idea of being a chiropractor was pretty cool and by the time I left high school I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life!

Upon completion of high school, I started my pre-chiropractic education immediately at KCKCC.  Following my year and a half there, I completed my undergraduate degree work at Park University.  I started Cleveland Chiropractic College in April of 1987, after squeezing all my undergraduate degree work into 2 short years.  I was eager to start chiropractic college and even more motivated to finish, so I doubled up on hours and went summers too.  As you might imagine I was the youngest person in my class at Cleveland and as such, made a quick "adjustment" from playful college kid, to serious student. (Well, kind of!)

I have been married to my wife Teresa for 19 years. Teresa and I were high school sweethearts and married shortly after I graduated from chiropractic college.  We have two boys, Jared and Mitchel.  The boys are typical boys in that they enjoy wrestling with Dad, playing sports, rowdiness and most of all being goofy.  Teresa grew up with just a sister, so she's not sure about all this typical boy stuff, but I know exactly where they got all their silliness from!!!

My favorite hobby is spending quality time with my family.  Although it can be challenging from time to time, both Teresa and I cherish the boys’ age and realize that all too soon there will be a day when they won't want us to read or sleep with them.  So we attempt the difficult job of managing a practice and caring for the needs of our practice members as well as time away from the office with family.

I still enjoy being competitive by playing sports.  I play basketball and softball with a great group of guys.  We try to be competitive but generally don't take ourselves too serious.  My favorite exercise is biking.  Biking allows me be on my own, think about things that need to be done or simply admire the scenery.  Recently I started playing racquetball and love the exercise and stress release that it gives.  I'm amazed at how fast the hour goes by and it doesn't seem like exercise to me.

I do adjustments for Teresa, Jared and Mitchel at least once a month, sometimes more depending on the situation.  I look forward to my adjustment every other week.  With the physical stress on my body, from treating people everyday, I need the extra care.  During the winter months, I workout three times a week, usually lifting weights and riding the stationary bike.  During warmer weather, I exercise about five times per week.  I struggle with getting bored while exercising inside, so I don't workout as much in the winter as I do in the summer.  However, it is important for me to stay somewhat regular with exercise all year round.

I believe that health comes from you, not to you. You were created with the ability to be healthy.  Health does not come from external sources such as lotions, potions and pills.  Health is a balance of physical, mental and biochemical factors.  Our mission at Schumacher Chiropractic is to help educate and empower people to maximize their health potential.  Chiropractic care is a very important piece of this wellness puzzle, in that "subluxations" interfere with your nervous system’s ability to communicate properly.  However, I don't feel this is all.  In my philosophy, wellness is comprised of 4 main factors:

  • Chiropractic care
  • Exercise
  • Nutrition
  • Stress relief

Without a good balance and attention to all 4 components, we fall short of true wellness.  We realize that our lives are very challenging and that we all have our vices but we help our patients make lifestyle changes that address their health but still allow them to live.  Let us help you find the healthy lifestyle you deserve!

Dr. Mark Asks some important questions of interest to Kansas City residents - Chiropractor Kansas City Dr. Mark Asks...

Can those with osteoporosis get chiropractic care?
Of course. When developing a care plan, we consider the unique circumstances of each patient. There are many ways we can adjust the spine. The chiropractic method we select will be best suited to your age, size and unique situation.
How could a child benefit from chiropractic?
Regardless of our age, each of us in Kansas City encounters physical, chemical and emotional stresses that exceed our ability to handle. For newborns, it could be the trauma encountered at birth. For toddlers it could be from learning to walk or ride a bike. Many of the problems we chiropractors see in adults are the result of neglected traumas from childhood.
